Dr.
Mathews received his medical degree from the University of
Southern California in 1975; He completed his internship and
residency at UCSD. He has been a member of the UCSD medical
faculty since 1979 and is currently director of the Owen Clinic
and Professor of Clinical Medicine.
Dr.
Mathews completed residency training in internal medicine
at UCSD in 1978 and joined the faculty in the Division of
General Internal Medicine. Between 1985-87, he attended UCLA
School of Public Health as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical
Scholar, completing the M.S.P.H. degree in health services
research and clinical epidemiology.
Dr. Mathews
has served for 6 years as a member of the FDA Antiviral Drugs
Advisory Committee. His primary research interests are in
HIV health services, quality of care, and international health.
He has published papers utilizing many of the methodologies
to be emphasized in our courses, including cohort analysis,
case control designs, survival analysis, survey research,
quality of life assessment, decision analysis, and diagnostic
test evaluation. In addition, he taught a 9 month weekly seminar
on biostatistics and epidemiologic methods for fellows and
junior faculty for 8 years, prior to directing and teaching
the CREST biostatistics core curriculum.Dr. Mathews directs
the Basic Biostatistics I and II core modules.
Dr. Mathews
has a strong interest in epidemiological and biostatistical
methods in patient oriented research and has taught courses
to fellows and junior faculty in these areas for over 10 years.
