He has worked with the American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the International Society of Nephrology in developing courses for fellows and practicing physicians in clinical nephrology and dialysis techniques used in the ICU. He has developed and directed an internationally recognized program in Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) at UCSD. He has organized nine international conferences on CRRT and six Advanced Nephrology postgraduate courses in clinical nephrology. He has also served on several NIH grant review committees.

Active in clinical research, Dr. Mehta has initiated several clinical studies, including two NIH-funded multi-center trials in acute renal failure (ARF), and has been an investigator in several industry-initiated trials. One of his particular interests is the collection, coordination and interpretation of information for large research databases.
Dr. Mehta is actively involved in resident and student teaching and has won the house staff-teaching award on six occasions. In 2003 he received the UCSD School of Medicine Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. Over the course of his academic career, he has trained over 40 post-doctoral fellows in nephrology, of whom 12 have carried out their research projects with him; another fellow is currently training with him. He also has served as a mentor for two junior faculty members through the NCLAM program, and currently mentors a K23 researcher at UCSD and five CREST students.
